Sandton at a glance

As Sandton continues to expand and grow as South Africa’s leading commercial business district, its property market has flourished alongside it. Described as a sophisticated district this area is home to the leaders in financial investment, commerce and industry. Sandton is made up of several sought-after suburbs where residents enjoy all the luxury and conveniences of a metropolitan city.

Sandhurst

Sandhurst is the wealthiest suburb in Sandton and one of the most exclusive in the country. Home to the creme de la creme of society, Sandhurst also boasts some of the most expensive real estate around. With sizable homes and quiet neighbourhoods, this area is a luxury, low-dense area which was established more than 50 years ago and has since grown into a secure residential haven - where prospective buyers contend for available properties. Located in proximity to the Gautrain and its bus services - there are many world-class amenities on offer. From the retail hubs of Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square to the prestigious private schools in the area.

Hyde Park

Bordering Illovo and Sandhurst, Hyde Park is named after one of the Royal Gardens in London, mirroring its prestige. As one of the most sought-after addresses in Sandton, Hyde Park can be compared to its namesake as the homes in this area have been built in a grand, stately style. Serviced by Beyers Naude Drive and Rivonia Drive, residents have easy access to surrounding areas, as Johannesburg and Sandton’s Centre is a 12 km and 4 km drive respectively.

Sandown

Forming part of the City of Johannesburg Municipality is the commercial and residential area of Sandown. Located in the CBD, this node is also referred to as Santon Central, with the Gautrain rapid rail system to be found here, linking Sandown to the O.R. Tambo International Airport and the Johannesburg Central and Pretoria. Named after a town, in the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, Sandown is one of many Sandton suburbs that shows its association with the ‘san’ prefix. Neighbouring Morningside, this prime position is not only a great locale for business but also as a residential destination.

Here you will find sprawling properties, numerous cluster developments and large family homes that are close to Sandown’s business opportunities. Due to this proximity, large volumes of young professional homebuyers flock to this location for its convenience. A mere 2 km from Sandton Square and Sandton City, it is obvious that Sandton’s sophistication has spilt over to Sandown making it a sought-after address, particularly among business-minded individuals.

Dunkeld

Found just North of Rosebank, between the equally popular areas of Melrose and Hyde Park is the charming little suburb of Dunkeld. Reminiscent of older Johannesburg, this residential hamlet boasts broad serene streets, lined with shady trees and large homes with established gardens. Easily accessible via Jan Smuts Avenue, which connects Dunkeld to the centre of Johannesburg and its commercial hub, you will find the Dunkeld West Centre. This shopping is home to the celebrated Fournos Bakery, a popular spot where locals enjoy deli lunches and a variety of baked goods.

Houghton

Once home to former South African President Nelson Mandela’s personal residence - Houghton is an extremely wealthy suburb of Sandton, with beautiful upmarket properties and many buildings of historical value. One of which includes the King Edwards VII School for Boys, which was built over a century ago.

Developed by the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company and laid out by surveyor Gustav Arthur Troye - Houghton was established as a residential area around the turn of the 20th century. Since then, this suburb has unofficially been divided into Upper Houghton (Southern side) which has been named a National Heritage Area and Lower Houghton (Northern side) that lie on both sides of the M1 freeway.

Bryanston

Named as an area in 1949 and officially established as a suburb in 1969 - around the same time as the rest of Sandton - Bryanston is still a relatively new area growing quickly as more and more people seek accommodation here, due to the wonderful employment opportunities to be found in this area. Though mostly residential, Bryanston does have some commercial activity that takes place in its fairly new corporate node called The Campus. There are many leading companies and large corporations that have their base of operation in Bryanston, these include the likes of Tiger Brands, Facebook, Microsoft and Ogilvy&Mather.

Atholl

The elite suburb of Atholl is located close to the centre of Sandton, seated just to the West of the Ben Schoeman Freeway (M1). Populated by some of Sandton’s wealthiest residents, this suburb offers everything one could want to live a comfortable lifestyle. From the lavish stately homes that occupy the streets to the convenient shopping centres and finest quality schools within its catchment area. Atholl Square is the most popular of this neighbourhood’s attractions - located on Katherine Street, this landmark gathering spot offers an eclectic mix of retail, entertainment and cuisine in an open-air piazza-style setting.

Hurlingham

Nestled between Sandhurst and Parkmore, you will find the Sandton gem of Hurlingham. Falling within the CBD, its neighbour Craighall is an indication of its upmarket status. When driving through this lush suburb, one passes modern townhouses and residential complexes - with spectacular views of its surrounds. Johannesburg’s elite choose to reside here as it is closely positioned to Sandton’s shopping hub and other trendy hotspots around the city. Sharing in the excitement and activity of the CBD, there are many attractions, services and activities widely available. These include the Bordeaux Riverside Park as well as the Braamfontein Sprout and walking trail.
